Completed in 1965, the Gateway Arch was constructed as a tribute to Thomas Jefferson and the role he and the city of St. Louis played in the Westward expansion of the United States. The arch is 630 feet wide and 630 feet tall. Designed by Eero Saarinen, the arch was built from the ground up, and the final four-foot piece to be constructed was the very top portion that connects the two legs of the Arch. Take a tram ride up to the top for a fantastic view of up to 30 miles on a clear day. Or, for the claustrophobic tourist, the Arch is just as nearly as impressive from the grassy park below.
