Fitness buffs, you have an incredible opportunity in store for you that is only a hop, skip and a jump away from Tokyo. A climb on Mt Fuji is a perfect accomplishment for the uber-determined! The sunrise climb, which takes off at 5:30 p.m. with a goal of reaching the summit by 2 a.m., offers the most incredible view of the sun rising over the city. The official climbing season is during July and August, so you’ll want to plan accordingly.
The small window of opportunity is important because it’s when the mountain is usually free of snow, the weather is relatively mild, access by public transportation is easy and the mountain huts are open. If you want to steer clear of the heaviest crowds, don’t go during Obon Week in mid August because there are so many people making the trek, there are long queues set up to handle the crowds.
