Upon their invention 200 years ago the famed Venetian gondolas came equipped with a roof and windows to protect passengers from any sort of weather. These windows also provided the origin for the first “Venetian blinds” still popular today. Currently, Venice is home to approximately 500 gondolas, nearly all of which have open tops to make for better viewing for travelers.
