Lay of the Land

Most Italian cities are divided into quarters, but Venice has precisely six quarters, and is thus divided into sixths, which are called sestieri: these include San Marco (the most famous), San Polo, San Croce, Castello, Cannareggio and Dorsoduro. If you arrive in Venice by train, you’ll be arriving in Cannareggio. Venice is a small city, so getting around or going from one sestiere to another is usually more of an exercise in discovery than a chore.

"I will never forget experiencing Venice for the first time. It feels like you are transported to another time—the art, music, food and pure romance in the air is like no other place." —Elizabeth Berkley
