London Calling

I decided to hop across the pond this week—if only via Skype—and check in with our pal Stuart Procter, the very dapper general manager of The Stafford hotel in London. Here, Stuart offers up his favorite spots on swanky Jermyn Street, situated just around the corner from the hotel.

The courtyard of The Stafford hotel, steps from the action of Piccadilly but worlds away in sensibility and style.

Preparing for the Hunt: Swaine Adeney Briggs. Why? Because they make every man look dapper! It’s also the place where I purchase my own birthday gifts . . . to myself. (I currently own one of their famed leather satchels and bespoke hunting garb.)

Personally Fitted: Harvie & Hudson. Why? To quote Stuart, “They’ve been around for bloody ever, and all they do make shirts and knickers. You can’t go wrong!” The family-owned business is known for its bold, and often exclusive, patterns appealing to even the most eccentric (me included).

Details, Details, Details: New & Lingwood. Why? Because socks complete the outfit, especially the more outrageous ones. I secure my most “creative” pairs from this Jermyn Street staple that was created to supply the boys of Eton College back in 1865.

The exterior of New & Lingwood, the place to go for Etonian-styled clothing including fabulous cricket caps.

Picture Perfect: Taylors of Old Bond Street. Why? Because primping just isn’t for the ladies, and this shop is the number one grooming place for London gents, specializing in old-school techniques and supplies. I refuse to shop anywhere else for my razor and badger hair shaving brush.

Never Clashing: Wiltons. Why? Because a dozen oysters and a glass of Pol Roger champagne match any outfit. Since 1742, this Jermyn Street establish has been the post-, pre- and mid-shop stop for those in the know.

Stuart Procter, the ringmaster at The Stafford hotel in the heart of London.

You just have to love that dashing Stuart! Cheerio!
