Paper Tales & Vapor Trails

I own a much-thumbed, vintage-era BlackBerry and am wondering if I should trade in “Baby” for the much-hyped iPad. Nah, I’ll wait a generation or two before I consider trading in the Berry. Frankly—an antique or not—my device has traveled with me around the world at least twice and has been a delightful partner in crime.

Besides, as my loyal readers know, I am a big believer in using paper to keep my affairs in order—albeit judiciously, naturally—and don’t see the need for a tablet quite yet. I carry a scarlet-hued Cosmic Diary from Smythson of Bond Street and don’t see myself ever parting with a paperbound date book. I write gobs of thank-you notes on creamy engraved cards from Crane’s. And while I cannot live without my darling, paperless Kindle (aka Kindle Carry On), I love nothing more than perusing a delicious non-chain bookstore when I stumble upon one of these Dodo-like dying breeds.

Let’s segue: Speaking of books, a delicious coffee table tome really sends me over the moon.

Here are some recent coffee table finds:

I am sitting here thumbing through the pages of the book Harbour Island by architect Wallace Tutt, and the luscious pages have transported me to the fabulous, relaxed-chic Bahamian isle.

Also on my bedside table is To India With Love: From New York to Mumbai from the folks at Assouline. This color-packed scrapbook of love letters to India will carry you to more exotic climes and has me considering a trip to this far-flung land.

Speaking of travel, I am soon off to Orlando and Disney World, St. Barts, Stockholm and Peru, so expect plenty of postcards from little ole me!

My old French teacher, Mrs. Pritikin, instilled the method of writing things down until you memorize them (or in modern days, I’d settle to at least not forget them). I, too, rely on my Blackberry; I have an iPod and my Google Calendar, but the only sure-fire way to promise I won't flake on an event, dinner, appointment, what have you, is if I write it down in my trusty pocket monthly calendar. Old habits die hard, but this is a habit I don't want to necessarily let go of.
