Every month I spend a few days in Minneapolis working with the team at Delta Sky magazine, and my short-break sojourns in Minnesota have allowed me to explore this amazing city. I am a longtime New Yorker, so for me to confess my love for a Midwestern fly-over city might be thought of as sacrilege. Well, forget what Anna Wintour of Vogue might say about “small houses,” I think that Minneapolis sort of rocks.
Take the restaurant scene: Fabulous, friendly and affordable. My most favorite spot of late has been Spoonriver, just across from the Guthrie Theater (a stunning building designed by Jean Nouvel), where I sit at the bar and sip a cool organic wine as I sup on the Tuscan salad loaded up with green beans, pine nuts and grilled radicchio and sprinkled with truffle oil, a steal at $8.
The theater! Speaking of the Guthrie, I just saw Tony Kushner’s newest play The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures, starring the amazing Kathleen Chalfant (last spotted in the film Duplicity opposite Clive Owen and Julia Roberts). OK, so Kushner’s lengthy play might boast an equally lengthy, tongue-twister-ish name, but watch for the play when it eventually ends up on Broadway. It’s terrific (ask my seatmate, director Mike Nichols—aka Diane Sawyer’s husband—who seemed thoroughly amused).
Museums such as the Mill City Museum and the Walker Art Center.
And that’s only scratching the surface.
I am off to London this weekend for two weeks, so get ready for updates from some of Britannia’s newest hotels, from the incredible Columbia Road Flower Market (a dream for garden enthusiasts) and from some of the grooviest new restaurants to open in my true home away from home (York & Albany, yum!).
Signing off.
