Hotel Stories

I am passionate about hotels, nutty for a good resort, crazy for some cosseting. I was lucky enough to grow up with parents who put a premium on traveling and zipped back and forth—and often—so I think I truly have hotels in the blood.

If asked at age six where I would like to travel, my answer would not have been Walt Disney World or Busch Gardens. No, I would have quickly responded: “The Plaza because of Eloise,” or, had I thought a bit more, “The Savoy because of the room service.” For even at such an early age, I was smitten with the delights of in-room dining: Today, nothing revs me up more than a slightly overpriced hamburger paired with crispy fries accompanied by a glass of Sauvignon Blanc placed just so on a tray. And accompanied by a rose in a bud vase and those darling miniature bottles of ketchup, natch.

If you want a sure-fire avenue to my heart, book a room and order me some room service toute de suite.

For the August issue of Delta Sky magazine, I am working on a fun feature currently entitled “Around the World in Forty Stays,” a multi-page story that has allowed me to explore some three dozen-plus of the world’s most fabulous hotels. Of course, this is an entirely subjective exercise since there are hundreds of amazing hotels spanning the globe, but then I think I have terrific taste, so there you go.

Here’s a sample of a favorite far-flung hostelry that you might find in the August issue:

Zamani Zanzibar Kempinski, Zanzibar, Tanzania

WHY WE LOVE IT: This five-star resort, smack in the middle of the Indian Ocean archipelago on the northeast coast of the wildly exotic island of Zanzibar, is truly heaven on earth. The hideaway resort offers 110 rooms, 7 private villas, an exclusive beach club and a romantic Jetty Bar overlooking the water.

Insider Tip: For a truly relaxing experience, get a traditional Thai massage and then chill out in the private spa pool.

Keep reading my blog for more favorite hotels, destinations and goodies for your jet set style. And if you don’t happen to be onboard a Delta plane in August, check out the digital version of the August issue of Sky here on our site.

Signing off.
