My journeys of late have been so far-flung, so “elsewhere,” if you will, that I decided it was time to look inward for a bit, to explore more native turf. Hence, I have just returned from Destination Kohler, a classic American resort built cheek-by-jowl with the Kohler plumbing empire’s Kohler, Wisconsin, factory. Sound a bit unusual? Believe us, somehow it all works—especially since the factory’s leafy streets were originally designed by landscape genius Frederick Law Olmsted.
I checked into the luxe Carriage House, an outbuilding of the resort’s postcard-perfect American Club, and was wowed by the bells and whistles in my bathroom. (Throughout the weekend, I luxuriated under the various sprays, jets and streams of water bursting from my shower’s lush entanglement of nozzles, hoses and streams.)
The exterior of the American Club.
I am not a golfer, but I wandered through Kohler’s Scottish Highlands-like Whistling Straits golf course and supped in its Brigadoon-esque clubhouse.
The decadent delights at Craverie.
I took the waters at the resort’s Kohler Waters spa (the Sea Lime Sigh left me buffed and polished and shining afresh); savored the charming Shops at Woodlake (stop in at the Craverie for a frothy cappuccino and chocolate); enjoyed a luxe dinner at the Immigrant Room; walked through the village’s verdant byways with their cottage-like homes; and tried my hand at yoga by the lake.
The stunning landscape at Whistling Straits.
Pure bliss, American style.
