Given the number of Italian immigrants who flooded into Argentina once upon a time, it’s no surprise the recipes they brought with them make for some of the best eating in town. Pizza lovers (yes, we said pizza in Argentina!) have so many excellent offerings it might be wise to forgo a pie at each stop for a slice—at least the traveling in between will keep the calories from going straight to your waistline! At Las Cuartetas—one of the most historic pizzerias of the Corrientes District—it’s half standing room only and don’t expect good service but the pizza is worth the hassle. There are two parlors—Los Inmortales and La Mezzett—in which you should definitely try the fugazetta rellena or pineapple and cheese pizza. For those who have a sweet tooth that needs satisfying, there are ice cream parlors (or heladerias) on nearly every corner. It’s tough to find one that isn’t primo delicioso. Scannapieco, tucked into the Palermo neighborhood is a standout, as is Persicco, which is noted for a chocolate gelato so creamy it nearly achieves the consistency of silly putty and tastes so rich it’s like an explosion on your tongue.
