Experience what plantation life was like in the 1800s at this historic attraction eight miles from downtown. Boone Hall has been open to the public since 1956 and is one of America’s oldest working plantations, still growing crops after more than 320 years. Under the ownership of the McRae family since 1955, the plantation once produced cotton and pecans, but today grows strawberries, tomatoes and pumpkins as well as other fruits and vegetables. Tour the 1936 plantation home, slave quarters and visit the garden’s antique roses that are more than 100 years old. The plantation also includes a butterfly pavilion where various species of butterfly roam freely. Boone Hall also plays host to several festivals and events throughout the year, including the BBQ and Bluegrass Festival and Taste of Charleston.
