Joining the First Ward’s Garden District and North Davidson’s Historic Arts District (Nodal), the McGill Rose Garden is a living work of art. It features 1,000 roses, plants and herbs; sculptures and garden art; an international working herb garden; a meditation garden for hospice; a garden shop; and more. Henry McGill purchased this former coal yard in 1950, and his wife inadvertently began the garden by planting two simple rose bushes to beautify the area. The garden opened to the public on Mother’s Day in 1967, and it has since grown into a beautiful urban space that is used for weddings, pictures, and daily strolls by residents and visitors alike. McGill Rose Garden is an All-America Rose Selections (AARS) public garden, one of only a handful in the entire state.
