Head to the Marine Science Center to learn more about the local wildlife that populate this coastal area. MSC is perhaps best known for its Turtle Rehabilitation program. The program provides housing and care for sick and injured sea turtles, hatchlings and washbacks (newly hatched baby sea turtles that are washed back to shore by rough seas). Once the turtles are rehabilitated, they are released, and most of the time, you can go along and watch the release take place. The MSC turtle rehabilitation area also includes care and treatment of freshwater turtles and land tortoises. In one year alone, the Marine Science Center received and cared for nearly 6,000 washback sea turtles, 422 hatchlings and 83 sea turtles ranging from juvenile green turtles to adult loggerheads. Other programs at MSC, which are usually free of charge, include exploring archaeological sites, mangrove swamps and wildlife havens as well as guided beach walks.
