Although construction on the Bonnet House began in 1920, the historic site indicates human activity that dates back to 2,000 B.C. Early settler Hugh Taylor Birch purchased the site in 1895 and gifted it to his daughter Helen and her husband, Chicago artist Frederic Clay Bartlett, in 1919. After Helen’s death and Bartlett’s remarriage to Evelyn Fortune Lilly, the home was embellished with many of the decorative elements visitors see today. The seaside retreat is reminiscent of a Caribbean plantation and retains all its original furnishings. Expect to see adornments of Davenport dessert plates and a collection of Spode china as well as a veiled bust by Italian sculptor G.B. Lombardi. Sit at the bamboo bar and imagine the former residents enjoying a cocktail before exploring the various sea-plucked artifacts in the shell museum. With everything from an aviary to a music room, this historic structure is well worth a visit. You must be on a guided tour to enter the Bonnet House Museum. The tour is approximately an hour and 15 minutes in length.
