Learn about shells and mollusks before going out to scout your own on the unspoiled pink beaches of Fort Myers, known as the top shelling spot in America. Locals take this hobby very seriously and commemorate the pastime with exhibits and educational programs such as the ones presented by the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. A base for the collection research of shells for science and historical purposes, this non-profit museum features more than 30 displays of these beautiful collectibles from around the world. Hands-on family fun is also provided with a learning lab, games, a children’s play area and tanks with live indigenous mollusks for viewing. The museum store offers a wide selection of shell books that you can peruse before setting off on your own shelling adventure out on the Sanibel or Captiva islands.
