It would be prematurely dismissive to write off Frankfurt as a boring, businesslike city. The wise wanderer will note that where there’s money, there’s patronage. And perhaps the loveliest way to enjoy the fruits of Frankfurt’s arts-supporting wealth is by snagging a ticket to see the opera at Opera Frankfurt. A mixture of premieres and repertoire define this program, with Mozart, Strauss, Verdi and Wagner supplemented by rare or contemporary works. New recordings of Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail and Puccini’s La Bohème received high praise. Special events, such as recitals or chamber music in the foyer of the opera house, round out the calendar—in total, an impressive 200-some performances per year.
