Several of Houston’s most historic buildings have been relocated here, to the city’s oldest park, which honors the city’s namesake soldier and statesman, Sam Houston, who was twice elected president of the Republic of Texas. The Old Place, a cabin built of rough-hewn cedar logs said to be the oldest structure in Houston, serves as an example of early Texas frontier architecture. Most structures are grander in style: The 1847 Kellum-Noble House boasts a Louisiana Plantation style, with a double gallery (porch) wrapping its perimeter, and the ornamentation of the 1868 Pillot House reflects the Eastlake Victorian style. Also noteworthy is the 1870 simplified Greek Revival Yates House—it was the home of a freed slave, Jack Yates, who rose to become a prominent preacher.
