The Apartheid Museum and Constitutional Court boast incredible design and architecture.
The
Apartheid Museum is a wonderful way to experience Johannesburg to the full extent. For tickets, visitors get a “Pass” modeled on the hated identity document blacks were forced to carry during apartheid. The museum features displays about forced removals, political prisoners and those who fought in the struggle, yet the effect is strangely more moving and inspiring than depressing.
Another historic South African establishment to visit is the new Constitutional Court, adjacent to the 1896-built Old Fort Prison on a rocky ridge dividing the inner city from the northern suburbs. Both Mohandas Gandhi and Mandela were imprisoned here, and a site tour includes a visit to their cells and a photo exhibition.
