Dine on some of the most delicious cuisine you'll find in all of South Africa at The Cradle.

From the glass skyscrapers and Art Deco architecture of the rejuvenated inner city to the savanna grasslands of the nearby Cradle of Humankind—site of some of the earliest hominid remains—the city is an exhilarating combination of modern and ancient.

You may be in the biggest metropolis in Africa, but the bush, grasslands and wild animals of the Cradle of Humankind, a 183-square-mile paleontology World Heritage Site, are only about a 45-minute drive away. Start at the famous Sterkfontein Caves, where more than 500 hominid fossils up to 3.3 million years old have been discovered since the 1930s. Join a game drive in the nearby Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, one of several private parks within the site, stocked with lion, cheetah, buffalo and rare white rhinoceros. Then enjoy a light lunch at The Cradle, a gorgeous Afro-Mediterranean restaurant owned by Prospero Bailey, grandson of legendary gold-mining magnate Sir Abe Bailey. Sip Cape wines and dine on venison carpaccio while antelope gather at a watering hole below.
