Take a walk through the seven-acre Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and learn about the island’s native and Polynesian-introduced plants. The staff at the gardens are cultivating and preserving the natural plant heritage of the island in an effort to showcase natural resources and the role they play in the economic, social and cultural livelihood of Maui. On a guided tour (available Tuesday and Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m.) learn about the history and ethno-botanical use of native and introduced plants, such as Hawaiian bananas, varieties of sweet potatoes, sugarcane, hibiscus and anapanapa, a plant that creates soap when combined with water.
