Kahului is located in central Maui on the north side of the island and borders the town of Wailuku, the county seat of the island. Home to Maui’s largest resident population with 26,000 locals, this is the commercial and shopping hub, where you’ll find government offices and big-box stores. Much of the coast in the Kahului Bay is dedicated to commercial traffic and sailing vessels, but the city’s best beaches also worth the trip. The Kanaha Beach near the airport on the north shore offers some of the best windsurfing and kiteboarding conditions on the island. Just a 20-minute drive east along the coast is the old plantation town of Paia, which features great restaurants and the infamous Charley’s Saloon, where locals and visitors alike congregate on the weekends for live music.
