Kahului is home to the main airport on the island of Maui and the second busiest airport in the state, offering interisland, domestic and international flights. It is also a hub for scenic tour operators, if you plan on taking a helicopter tour of the island. The airport is only a couple of miles from the city center, which is easily accessible by taxi, rental car or public bus. The Maui Bus public transit service runs seven days a week, with routes from the airport and throughout the city, as well as to most major destinations on the island at $2 a ride. But, don’t plan on relying on the public bus throughout your stay because it only runs every hour to two hours. The best way to get from Kahului to the other major hot spots of the island is with a rental car, and there are offices for all major rental car companies at the airport and throughout the city. Be sure to book a rental car in advance if you are traveling to Maui during peak seasons and wear your seatbelt, there is a steep fine for not buckling up. If you’re just staying within Kahului, walking and renting a bicycle are also great options, as the town is small enough to explore without gas.

“I went to Maui to stay a week and remained five. I never spent so pleasant a month before, or bade any place goodbye so regretfully.” —Mark Twain
