The 33rd president, Harry Truman, hails from Independence, Missouri, just outside of Kansas City. That’s where you’ll find his presidential library, open since 1957. In addition to the library, there is a museum section of the building that tells Truman’s life story—from childhood through his years as president, as well as his later years. Learn more about the man who dropped the first atomic bomb (which ended World War II), and proposed the first national health care plan. You’ll also find an oval office replica, a White House Decision Room and the gravesites of Harry Truman and his wife, Bess. Oh, and be sure to check out his famous “THE BUCK STOPS HERE” desk sign.
