Kansas City earned the “City of Fountains” nickname for its impressive number of water features (after Rome, it’s the city with the most fountains in the world). The fountain tour is an excellent way to kill two birds with one stone—touring the city and visiting its most famous fountains. Kansas City’s first fountain was built by the Humane Society of Kansas City in 1904, with the purpose of giving horses, birds and dogs a place to drink. Since then, 46 additional fountains popped up all over the city. Call the City of Fountains Foundation to arrange for a bus tour of the fountains and statues (some more than 300 years old) around town. There are also walking tours available by request. If you want to go it alone, the City of Fountains website has an online guide available.
