The lifelong project of Robert Allerton, scion of one of Chicago’s richest families, and his partner John Gregg, Allerton Garden is a testament to the power of landscape design. In the spectacular natural setting of the verdant Lawa’i Valley, Allerton and Gregg—in partnership with their gardener Hideo Teshima—created a series of architecturally themed garden “rooms” that step down to the sea. Starting in the 1930s and continuing through the 1970s, Allerton and Gregg traveled the world collecting sculpture and design elements, around which they designed each elegant “room.” Managed by the National Tropical Botanical Garden for the Allerton Gardens Trust, the tour includes the couple’s former home, which Gregg designed, and the estate’s pristine private beach.
