Starting at the end of the road where Highway 50 dead-ends at the foot of the cliffs known as the Napali coast, Kalalau Trail that skirts the cliffs of the Napali coast is one of the best known hikes in all of Hawaii. Not for the faint of heart, the first half hour is steep, rocky, and treacherous in places. Unless you’re a strong and experienced hiker, you might want to take a guide from Outfitters Kauai, who lead well-organized Napali adventure hikes. Once at the top the trail levels and smoothes, although if you’re nervous about heights you’ll want to avoid looking over the cliffs to your right. The views of the cliffs, trees, and turquoise blue ocean below are beyond description, so bring your camera and prepare to make lots of photo stops. . If you want to go all 11 miles to Kalalau Beach, it’s recommended not to do it in one day but as a backpacking overnight, and you’ll need a permit.
