If you’re not familiar with Fela Kuti, known as the father of Afrobeat, do yourself a favor and spend some time researching his legacy before you head to Nigeria. This legendary musician and politically-vocal figure was influential in shaping African music on the world stage. His original Afrika Shrine of the 1970s and 1980s (where Fela lived) was a mysterious place rumored to be a hedonist drug and sex haven that was destroyed by the government in the 1990s. After Kuti’s death, due to complications from AIDS, the shrine was rebuilt by Fela’s son, Femi Kuti, to commemorate his father’s legacy. Today, international artists in their own right, Femi Kuti and his brother Seun Kuti carry on their father’s legacy and regularly perform at the Shrine whenever they’re in town. The Kutis are the closest example of musical royalty that Nigeria has.
