Located along Victoria Island on Ahmadu Bellow Way, Bar Beach is the most famous and notorious beach in the entire city. Blocks of concrete, acting as artificial levees, keep back the Atlantic waters which have been known to aggressively flood its banks. It attracts a variety of residents—from squatters and street walkers to businessmen and young professionals who come to stretch their legs and enjoy the cool Atlantic Ocean breeze on hot humid days. Take a leisurely stroll or go horse-back riding along the shores. You may be tempted to jump in, however, because of its strong churning currents, swimming and surfing at Bar Beach can challenge even world-class athletes and is strongly discouraged. While it may not be like an idyllic Caribbean beach, Bar Beach is definitely a favorite among locals and travelers alike.
