Lay of the Land

Lagos is divided into three main areas—Victoria Island and the Lekki Peninsular, Lagos Island and Lagos Mainland. You’ll find the best restaurants and hottest nightlife on Victoria Island amidst high tech companies, banking headquarters and extravagant mansions along the Lekki Peninsular on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. This part of town also happens to be the favorite hangout location for expats and foreigners. Lagos Island is the Lagos you usually see broadcast on TV—vibrant and energetic with traffic going every-which-way. This is the entrepreneurial heartbeat of the city with lots of shopping, open-air street markets and small businesses. Lagos Mainland, or locally called just “Mainland,” is a lot more residential with shops, schools and universities in between. Most of Lagos’ residents live on the mainland. Though Victoria Island is roughly 13 to 14 miles away from the airport, it can take one to two hours to reach your destination due to traffic. Another island worth noting is Ikoyi which has a lot of government and military offices in addition to expensive real estate and high-end shopping.
