On nice weekends hikers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts from Lexington and beyond hightail it for Red River Gorge, a natural wonderland 45 minutes from Lexington. Dramatic sandstone cliffs and exposed limestone rock faces make up the rugged terrain. Part of the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Gorge area entices nature fans, photographers and city-dwellers with 500 miles of trails through spectacular scenery and more than 100 natural arches—its claim to fame being the greatest concentration of arches east of the Rocky Mountains. Canoe the Red River, watch for the some 100 species of birds and the array of wildlife and test your rappelling and climbing skills. Join travelers from around the globe at Miguel’s Pizza & Rock Climbing Shop (1890 Natural Bridge Road), a cult favorite among rock climbers. Even non-climbers can explore the 65 feet high sandstone rock bridge for stunning views across the Natural Bridge State Park.
