The wife of Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln was born in Lexington on December 13, 1818, the fourth of sixteen children. Mary spent her girlhood in this large two-story brick, late- Georgian house. Her temper and scandalously extravagant expenditures were cause for ruckus in Washington D.C., overshadowing her work with wounded soldiers and contraband slaves. On a visit to this 14-room house—which Abraham Lincoln visited for three weeks—travelers can see details that made up daily life in this wealthy household in that era. A Kentucky Sugar Chest stored precious white sugar reserved for special occasions and was only accessed with a key held by the lady of the house. A limestone top beaten biscuit board was used to make the popular biscuits still loved today. Look for the portrait of Mary with her signature flowers in her hair.
