Cross the river during the day to explore this state park where you can walk in Lewis and Clark's footsteps—and travel back millions of years further. Thanks to the retreat of Ice Age glaciers, the floor of an ancient tropical sea was exposed, leaving behind some 600 types of fossils embedded in the sea floor. Pick up a fossil guide at the interpretive center to help you identify the creatures fossilized in the limestone beds. Scramble up rocks and see if you can find remains of a giant snail, honey coral and horn coral in the upper beds, and in the lower beds (accessible in the fall) branching coral and pipe organ coral. After nightfall you're in many locals' favorite vantage point for a stunning view of the Louisville skyline.
