The Terrace, as it is known by locals and college students who treasure it as their outdoor recreation room, is situated on the shores of Lake Mendota. It’s a picture-perfect postcard location to relax on one of the brightly colored starburst chairs and watch sailboats and canoes go by, or rent and try one out firsthand. Grab a cold beer and a grilled bratwurst from the outdoor refreshment stand or take the time to wait in line for a scoop of ice cream made at the on-campus Babcock Dairy Plant. In the summer, there is live music five nights a week. Walk west along the shore to pick up the start of the Lakeshore Path, which winds along the campus and a nature preserve. It’s about a five-mile round trip from the Terrace to Picnic Point, a mile-long peninsula that has long been a hot spot for marriage proposals. The San Francisco Examiner once named it one of the 10 best places to kiss in the world.
