Glaciers formed the region—and its lakes—when they retreated 13,000 years ago. The first family moved to Madison in 1837, one year after Wisconsin’s territorial legislature voted to make it the capital city. Rosaline and Eben Peck used their home as a boarding house for the men who came to construct the Capitol, and they named their first-born daughter Wisconsiana. Today, the city’s population is about 233,000.
