Madrid, which was declared the capital of the Spanish empire in the 16th century, is a rare mixture of Roman and Arab influences. Buildings and artifacts reflect the architectural influences of both, as do artwork of the period. One of the most famous Spanish painters, Diego Velázquez, who painted the infamous Las Meninas (The Maids of Honor), spent much of his time as King Philip IV’s official court painter in the city.
