The National Civil Rights Museum, which is housed in the Lorraine Motel—the scene of Dr. Martin Luther King’s tragic death in 1968, is a destination of importance for anyone who’s passionate about civil rights. Today, the space is used to remind visitors of the struggles that resulted in the Civil Rights Movement with interactive and historical exhibits, video clips and artifacts. The attention to detail makes for a chilling peek back in time to an era when things were markedly different, an example of which is the life-sized bus similar to the one in which Rosa Parks took a back seat in 1955. You can even visit the motel room where King spent his last hours. The creators of the museum see its transformation as a turning away from a tragic, scarred site to a enlightening sacred ground.
