So you can’t imagine music that got no soul? Then your first stop in Memphis should be the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, a not-to-be-missed destination. In fact, it is said that the soul of this jiving city lives at this studio—the original site where Booker T. & the MGs , Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and the Staple Singers recorded their hits during the 1960s and ’70s. Raw and real, this place is where talent and passion won out over the plushy comforts and big-name producers of other recording studios across the country. And the cats that recorded here had the chart-toppers to prove it. They don’t call it Soulsville, USA, for nothing. Because Stax music came from the soul, the museum includes a 105-year old church from the Mississippi Delta where souls were saved and plenty of gospel music was made.
