The South is famous for its quackery, but the Peabody Ducks take the cake when it comes to their red carpet extravaganzas. Each day at 11 a.m., five mallards parade to the hotel’s central fountain, orchestrated by a “duckmaster,” carrying a Brass-head Duckmaster cane, and a wearing a red jacket complete with Epaulettes. Quite at home with all of the attention, the ducks waddle their way water-ward to John Philip Sousa’s King Cotton March. The frisky five-some then reverse the trip, heading back to their perch on the rooftop, at 5 p.m. If you find yourself leaving the hotel after the evening strutfest, prance across the street to Charles Vergos’ Rendezvous for some of the restaurant’s famous pork ribs. The nightly line to get into this back-alley joint speaks volumes for its dry-rubbed ribs and signature sauce, the recipe for which has long been a well-kept secret. It’s a good spot for star sightings, as even Elvis and The Rolling Stones have partaken of the food here, though we understand that Elvis has indeed left the building!
