Metropolitan Cathedral is both the largest and oldest in the Americas, and features a jumble of different architectural styles, woven together to make a magnificent whole. Built directly on the site of (and using many stones from) the ancient Aztec Templo Mayor, the cathedral originally stood as a symbol of Spanish dominance over the native people. The building was under construction for more than two centuries and designed by several architects which gives it a fascinating mix of styles.
