Lay of the Land

The 9 million residents of Mexico City live at an elevation of 7,350 feet above sea level, more than 2,000 feet higher than Denver, Colorado. Despite its size, Mexico City is easy to navigate. The city is divided into 350 colonias, or neighborhoods. Colonia Centro is the historic center of the city; Zona Rosa (Colonia Juárez) and Polanco (Colonia Polanco) are upscale neighborhoods; there are excellent restaurants and in the quiet neighborhoods of colonias Condesa and Roma.
