It’s clear upon entry to the eclectic boutique Base that the visionary behind it has quite the independent streak. Steven Giles proclaims his choices for bringing some of the grooviest goods under one roof is a refusal to bend to the passing fancy. “We’ve avoided allegiances to anything other than what we like,” he says. And what he likes, the in-crowd digs. The shop is a clothing mecca, and the music and book offerings he brings together keep locals and visitors returning to the shop in droves. The personal shopping service at Base is renowned with South Beach’s tastemakers.
