It may be a bit out of the way but for architecture buffs, the Chiesa di San Francesco al Fopponino is well worth the effort to get there. The Province of Milan entrusted Muzio and Dolce with the project of a new church in 1959. Two years later the job was taken over by Gio Ponti, who designed an innovative holy building in a matter of months. The project was finally concluded in 1964 and the new church was dedicated to San Francesco d’Assisi, patron saint of merchants. Ponti’s design is characterized by a simple Franciscan style wherein the lack of decorative elements helps emphasize the structure’s forms and its upward momentum.
