Even shopping malls are stunning in Milan. Designed by Giuseppe Mengoni to be covered in steel and glass, this cross-shaped arcade dates to the late 19th century and has became the prototype of enclosed shopping malls around the world. Unfortunately the designer died days before the Galleria opened in 1878 and didn’t get to see the Milanese (and the world) fall in love with his creation. Walk through the Galleria to make your way between the Duomo and La Scala, shop at one of the many brand name boutiques (Prada’s flagship store has been here since 1913) or take a seat at a café or restaurants to watch the fashionable crowd go by.
