Shortly after construction in 2001, TIME magazine dubbed this museum’s Quadracci Pavilion—with its stark-white, 217-foot-wide bird’s wings that soar into the sky above a cathedral-like space with 90-foot-high glass ceilings—“design of the year,” and no wonder. Santiago Calatrava’s first North American project brought national visibility to an already fine museum, with about 25,000 works that include folk and Outsider art, a Chihuly sculpture in its atrium, American art post-1960 and German Expressionist prints and drawings.
