Arriving into Mitchell International Airport, drop by the GO Airport Shuttle desk near baggage claim to arrange a shared-shuttle ride to your destination and coordinate a return trip to the airport on your departure date. Fares to downtown Milwaukee, which is nine miles from Mitchell, run around $20 each way. While Milwaukee lacks a subway system, should you decide to rent a car don’t worry because traffic jams are far and few between, making your time on highways I-894, I-94 or I-43 a breeze. In addition, the city of Milwaukee is laid out on a grid system, and the numbered streets run North-South, making it very easy to find addresses. Taxis run up and down the streets in downtown and the East Side, which means you can simply hail one, but you would need to call a cab company if elsewhere in the city or its outlying suburbs. Yellow Cab Co-op and Veteran Taxi Cab Co-operative serve Milwaukee, and in the Western suburbs, dial up Best Cab or Lake Country Cares Cab. General Mitchell Taxi cabs are usually outside of the airport terminal in search of passengers needing a lift. If you prefer to rely upon public transportation, the Milwaukee County Transit system’s buses ($2.25 one-way fare; 10-ride and weekly passes also available) accesses all neighborhoods in the city, some suburbs, and all major attractions.
