Situated on a small island in the middle of the Moscow River, the Red October Chocolate Factory produced tantalizing confections for more than a century before being converted into a hip cultural mecca in 2008. The red-brick warehouses that once housed production lines have been reincarnated into galleries, design studios, bars, cafes and the like. Set aside a day to explore the area. The Lumière Brothers Center of Photography (3 Bolotnaya Nab., 7-495-223-1387) researches and exhibits Soviet-era photos. Clothing boutique Russian Street (8 Bersenevskaya Nab., 7-495-771-0614) features up-and-coming local designers. Blogistan (6/3 Bersenevskaya Nab., 7-910-429-4644) serves Ukrainian beer and snacks in a cafeteria-style space that doubles as an exhibition hall. And don’t forget to get a close-up of sculptor Zurab Tsereteli’s enormous statue of Peter on the tip of the island.
