Go behind the red brick walls of the Kremlin. The guarded fortress is the seat of the Russian government. Inside, you’ll find a complex of churches, palaces and administrative offices, as well as the working residence of the president of the Russian Federation—so keep an eye out for the commander-in-chief. Only a handful of buildings are open to the public. Start your tour at the Armory Palace, an arms store built in 1511 that is now a museum showcasing an impressive collection of tsar coronation robes, gilded carriages and Fabergé eggs. Next, visit Assumption Cathedral to see where centuries of tsars were coronated. Back outside, you can’t miss the Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell, two imposing monuments that have curiously never been fired or rung, respectively.
