Transportation 101

Moscow’s palatial subway stations make the metro system the most civilized and efficient way to traverse the city. But above ground, “citizen cabs,” private cars that work as unofficial taxis are popular. To hitch a ride, stand in the direction you want to travel and stick your arm out. A short trip can cost as little as $3 if you’re a good negotiator. This mode of transportation is generally safe, but as a precaution avoid getting in a car with more than one occupant.
