The Brandhorst’s bold, multicolored façade serves as a good indicator that this art museum isn’t of the stuffy variety. In fact, many people consider the building itself to be a work of modern art: 36,000 vertically hanging ceramic rods, finished in 23 different colored glazes, looks like an abstract painting from afar. The Udo and Anette Brandhorst Collection opened to the public in May 2009, and now houses more than 700 works. Paintings, sculptures and installations provide an aesthetic experience that will blow modern art lovers’ minds, and spark conversation amongst those who still “aren’t sure that they get it.” Look for pieces from Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and more than 60 works by American artist Cy Twonmbly. Known for his large-scale paintings covered in graffiti and childlike scribbles, the museum built a polygonal room specifically to display Twombly’s famous masterwork ‘Lepanto’, granting the twelve large-format individual components a panoramic display.
