If a square bottle of rich caramel-colored liquor with its famous black label is your mixer’s best friend, then a visit to the Jack Daniel Distillery will be a trip of giddy proportions. This is the oldest distillery in the United States, and is the place Jack himself first crafted the recipe for Old No. 7. The pure iron-free cave spring water, which is said to be the secret to the brand’s uniqueness, still flows forth in this shrine to whiskey. Located in Lynchburg, just over 60 miles from Nashville, it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to a world that seems to be centuries away.
If you’re in town in October, the hollow fills with people anticipating some of the best barbecue in the country as the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue kicks off. Teams from around the world compete in the categories of pork ribs, pork shoulder, beef brisket and chicken, as well as sauces and desserts.
If you’re not in town for the fête, take a free guided tour. If your idea of fun is visiting with a group as you wind through the bucolic countryside of Middle Tennessee, tours depart from Nashville.
